Kristen Stewart thinks the motion picture that made her renowned is "such a male lover movie."
The "Twilight" star made the admission about the 2008 romance film in an interview with Variety, published Thursday, chronicling her journey to becoming a queer pioneer in the entertainment industry. Stewart is approaching her eighth Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where she headlines homosexual romance thriller "Love Lies Bleeding" and sci-fi flick "Love Me."
Stewart said she "can only see now" how one of her most heterosexual roles in "Twilight" has a gay undertone.
"I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the proof that I was there at all, it was percolating. It's such a gay movie," she said. In "Twilight," Stewart played Bella Swan, a young woman who moves to a small town in Washington and falls in affection with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who is secretly a vampire. Teenager-turned-werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) becomes another romantic interest for Bella.

There's a trend on TikTok where fans of "The Twilight Saga" movie franchise will piece together montages of Kristen Stewart's Bella Swan and affectionately profess "my gay awakening" in the caption .
Now, the Oscar-nominated actor, who famously came out as gay on "Saturday Night Live" in 2017, has seemingly confirmed what many fans of the bigscreen adaptations knew all along: that the films and their pale-skinned and furry characters are queer coded.
"I can only see it now," Stewart told Variety in a recent interview, reflecting on her time with the five-film franchise, which released its first feature in 2008. "I don't think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It's such a gay production. I mean, Jesus Christ, [co-stars] Taylor [Lautner] and Rob [Pattinson] and me, and it's so secret and not OK.

While on the surface the films are about the romance between a regular school young woman (Stewart) and the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), Stewart has had a lot of time to reflect on the movies since they ended, and she sees distinct "gay" undertones in them.

For context, Stewart is openly homosexual, and got engaged to her girlfriend Dylan Meyer back in 2021.
"It’s such a gay movie," she continued. "I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK. I imply, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to ruin you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love."
Stewart has two movies coming up soon: Love Me, which premieres at Sundance Festival on Jan. 19, and Love Lies Bleeding, which will be released March 8.

If you strolled down a middle school hallway in November 2009, chances are some random guys would cackle at any mention of Jacob Inky, Bella Swan, or Edward Cullen with utterances of “gayyyy.” This was an age of movies hinging entire gags on “do you know how I know you’re gay?” where the height of comedy for man-children and actual male children everywhere was to label something with these three little letters.
