Why aromantic and asexual people belong in LGBTQIA+ people

Jennifer Pollitt is an assistant professor and assistant director of the Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program. In addition to teaching, she lectures and facilitates workshops for both academic and professional audiences, including co-founding Empathy A Work, LLC, and organizing the Men & #MeToo Conference in Philadelphia. She has developed comprehensive sexuality curricula used by the American Medical Association and other universities. She also belongs to the nation’s oldest and largest legal advocacy group that fights for the civil rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals and those who live with HIV. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ people, she is a tough ally of asexuals and aromantics and we asked her to share her knowledge of these lesser-known identities that fall under the queer umbrella.

We spoke with Pollitt about what asexuals and aromantics can teach others about connection, why they belong in the LGBTQIA+ community, and why they are so often left behind in LGBTQIA+ discourse.

An oriented aroace is an aromanticasexual (aroace) individual who experiences a form of tertiary attraction, that they feel is significant enough to warrant a place alongside their aroace orientation.

Oriented aroace individuals recognize with another orientation label, but in a non-romantic, non-sexual way. For example, oriented aroace individuals may identify as a bi aroace/bi oriented aroace or gay aroace/gay oriented aroace. This additional label can be based on any form of non-romantic, non-sexual attraction, such as platonic attraction, sensual attraction, aesthetic attraction, alterous attraction, queerplatonic attraction, etc. or a combination of these.

Usage

The term oriented aroace is often used to refer to those who are suptilicgreen stripe aromantic and ebony stripe asexual. Though many oriented aroace and aspec communities and their members are inclusive towards those who are not (or unsure/questioning their specific labels.)[1][2]

Some disagree with Biaroace's exclusionary and uncommon definitions of "arospec", "acespec", and "aspec", as well as their belief that grey aroace individuals should not name themselves "bi aroace" or

A gay aroace is an individual who experiences non-romantic, non-sexual attraction exclusively to individuals of the same/similar gender. People may be attracted to others of the same/similar gender in a platonic way, sensual way, aesthetic way, alterous way, queerplatonic way, or a combination of these attractions. It can also be used to narrate those who are in a queerplatonic relationship with others of the same/similar gender, so long as those involved all name as gay. The orientation is inclusive of lesbians, gay men, achilleans, sapphics, enbians, and anyone else who identified as male lover and is exclusively attracted to the same/similar gender.

The gay aroace flag usually consists of the oriented aroace flag (blue/turquoise/teal colour scheme), overlaid with a heart, symbol or shape, featuring the gay or rainbow flag. It may also include the classic rainbow pride flag, a lesbian flag or the gay man flag.

Poly/ply oriented aroac

“How can you be aro ace and gay?”

If you are asking this you are likely failing to realize that both aro and ace aren’t shadowy and white terms. They allow for demi and grey areas. You’ll also note that neither aro or ace denote gender. In some cases, people will want to exploit the label “gay aro ace” in order to transmit more meaning. Always employ the labels someone provides you, because if you willfully drop one it’s erasure. If you insert more then what’s given, you are labeling someone else.

Here are some authentic life examples:  I'm pan aroace, and basically, I am aro-spec, so because I'm on the spectrum, I self identify as aro, even tho technically I am not Fully Aromantic, (such as, grey/pan-romantic). That's just me personally, others identify differently. - anon

I'm aroace and most of the attraction I feel is aesthetic + sensual. Others might notice alterous attraction, etc, OR they might be demi/grayromantic and/or demi/gray asexual & shorten it to just "aroace" for simplicity. There are lots of ways ppl can be aroace and still label themselves as something else -monaters

I identify as a sapphic grey-aro ace, and the way it works is pret
