Research shows that LGBTQ+ people have higher rates of mental health challenges than the general population, typically as a result of facing ongoing discrimination over their lifetimes. But we also know that having allies makes all the difference. This article proposals hope for anyone who knows these struggles.

Welcome to the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia, the portal for the 2SLGBTQ+ / Lgbtq+ / Q community in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

The goal of the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia is to have a page for every person, place, thing and event of relevance to the Q community in Halifax, ever. As of January, we have over six hundred thousand words in two thousand finished pages, works-in-progress, or article stubs, and about thirty five hundred images and several dozen hours of audio and video recordings.

The Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia (H•R•E) is constructed for easy storage and retrieval of facts, stories, and indexes to the locations of others. Here are some tips for doing research.

June is Pride Month

June is Pride Month, a second to celebrate Nova Scotians from the two-spirit, female homosexual, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities and show on the important serve of activists and advocates who champion and combat for equity, dignity and respect for all.

This year marks 10 years since gender identity and gender expression were added as protected characteristics under the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act. While milestones enjoy this are cause for celebration, they are also opportunities to reflect on how exclusionary policies and systemic inequities oppress and act as barriers to inclusion for Nova Scotians.

We do not have to look far to view how members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community continue to face oppression, exclusion and discrimination. The politicization of identity and culture fuel deep divides across communities and we must be vigilant and vocal in order to ensure the protection, and advancement of the rights of all Nova Scotians.

    Elderberries is a Halifax-based non-profit group of 2SLGBTQ+ persons aged fifty-plus, along with families, friends, and supporters. We meet once or twice monthly for social potlucks and guest speakers; offer a Speakers' Bureau to schools and community groups; provide a contact point for community-related research projects; promote insight of local 2SLGBTQ+ history and literature; and hire in political activism.

    GET OUT HALIFAX is a group for everyone interested in finding lgbtq+ community and events that do not involve alcohol, parades, or nightclubs but instead revolves around the outdoors and recreation.

    Glitter Bean Cafe is a queer-centric, unionized, worker-owned co-op offering specialty coffees, teas, baked treats, brightness fare, liquor service, catering, venue rental and collective events! They are a great source of group information, often running fundraisers and in general offering a safe space for the queer community in Halifax.
