Best LGBTQ+ shows, movies and characters to enjoy on Disney Plus

The history of LGBTQ+ representation in clip and on TV is a fascinating (and sometimes frustrating) one. Thankfully, progress has been made by top streaming channel Disney Plus. For instance, to celebrate Pride 2022,Disney Plus launched a curatedPride Collection of movies, short films and series to observe Pride. The Pride Collection is housed with all of the other Disney Plus collections on the site and will be updated on a regular basis.

Here, however, is our own curated list of Disney+ which includes many of the LGBT+ selections from the Pride Collection as well as other top shows, movies and favorite characters we've highlighted....

All 10 Times Disney Introduced Its First Openly Homosexual Character (and Gave Us Nothing)

Disney has established itself as one of the leading studios when it comes to movies, TV series, and popular franchises. Between its classic Disney Princess movies, the action-packed MCU and Star Wars brands, and its collection of Pixar titles, you'd be hard-pressed to locate someone who hasn't seen or at least heard of the company.

Another, more unfortunate reputation Disney has forged for itself is its constant queerbaiting when marketing certain movies. Indeed, the company has, on many occasions, announced its "first openly gay character," and proudly patted its back for seemingly taking steps at positive visibility and inclusion. However, what has always ended up the case is these characters or moments creature nothing more than a split-second "acknowledgment" — which is being generous, truly. Below, we’ve put together a list of all the characters in Disney films with this claim to fame, and how disappointed audiences were by the (unsucessful) inclusion.

I don't know about you, but as a Gen Z'er, I spent practically every waking hour of childhood watching TV shows on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. OK, so maybe not EVERY waking hour, but I watched it as much as I could.

And as it turns out, some of our fave stars who we grew up adoring actually ended up coming out as LGBTQ+ long after their time as infant stars ended. So it's about time we observe them, shall we? Let's go!

1.Gotta start with our girl, Raven-Symoné. She came out as gay publicly in 2013, ten years after That’s So Raven first aired. She said she’s known since she was 12, though, while she was on the show. Raven got married to her wife, Miranda Pearman-Maday, in 2020!

2.Miley Cyrus, like the absolute representative that she is, came out as pansexual in 2016. She opened up about how she's "always hated the word 'bisexual,'" because she felt it put her "in a box," and also said her first-ever relationship was "with a chick." ALL HAIL THE QUEEEEEN!

3.Demi Lovato is a queer Disney icon, of course, but you might not keep in mind how she came out. In 2015, she confirmed that the banger "Cool For The Summer" was about a relationship with a woman. Eventually, she came o

Disney Channel has first ever gay storyline in children's show

The Disney Channel has announced it will reveal a central gay storyline for the first day on a children's TV show.

Andi Mack, a reveal about a teenage young woman discovering herself and dealing with the everyday problems of her young being, will have a second season starting on Friday.

Disney has announced a novel storyline will be introduced, as Andi and her male friend Cyrus both fall in love with the same boy.

"Andi Mack is a story about 'tweens' figuring out who they are," the children's channel said in a statement on Thursday.

"The cast and everyone involved in the show take superb care in ensuring that it's appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity."
