LastyearI fell down a Google-image rabbit hole searching for a particular vintage photo of a mustachioed bloke, alone and nude, in the bluffs of a rocky desert canyon. Dial it a keepsake from adolescence. As is often the case, the guy in my head proved difficult to find.
What I stumbled upon instead was an online society of gays devoted to speculation over the fates of their favorite untouchably beautiful men from nudie magazines and dirty sex loops: alleged real names, alleged wives, alleged professions, alleged sightings in grocery stores or elevators. I found message boards matchmaking app back over 15 years, chronicling a network of starstruck detectives across the globe.
I suddenly did the math on the disco-haired, mutton-chopped, mustachioed man in my head: He would probably be in his early to mids today.
Where does a being go after a naked stint in the desert? Do you tell your friends? Your family? Accomplish you cross over to hardcore and burn out in the fast road, Dirk Diggler-style?

In the lead-up to its episode &#;Welcome to My Nightmare, The Chris Colt Story&#;, VICE&#;s Dark Side of the Ring kept promoting that Colt was &#;The best wrestler you’ve never heard of.&#;
Good tag line, but not exactly correct.
Steven Johnson and I featured him in our book, The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Heels, since we had both been long fascinated by Colt and his story &#; which was very much in doubt at that point.
So many questions at the hour The Heels came out were unanswered. Was he alive? Did he perish of AIDS? We did our best, and the wrestling world helped with a lot through the years, including two masterful pieces here on the site: Colt’s gay films a purposeful dig and Mat Matters: When Chris Colt met Joe Cocker.
But unlike, say, last week&#;s episode on Harley Race, which didn&#;t really destroy a ton of fresh ground, the Dark Side of the Ring on Colt only added to the mystique and the story.
One cannot watch it and not want to learn even more.

In , a retired professional wrestler contacted filmmaker Jack Fritscher to pitch an idea for a film. The wrestler wanted to make a film that would pull back the curtain on the secrets of the squared circle. He, however, didn’t desire to reveal the usually guarded secrets like predetermined finishes that people already knew. He wanted to reveal the secrets of pro wrestling’s hidden homosexuality.
The movie wouldn’t be made for theaters. That’s not the type of feature that Fritscher made.
Fritscher isn’t a traditional filmmaker. Outside of directing, he authored a number of books including Leather Blues and Popular Witchcraft Straight from the Witch&#;s Mouth. His academic writing appeared in Bucknell Review and The Journal of Popular Culture. He was also the editor-in-chief for the lgbtq+ publication Drummer magazine, which, according to the magazine itself, explored the earth of &#;leather sex, leatherwear, leather and rubber gear, S&M, bondage and discipline, erotic styles and techniques.&#;
