Merry & Bright: 10 Must-Watch Gay Christmas Movies

The holidays are here, honey, and what better way to warm your heart (and maybe sip some eggnog) than with a fabulous lineup of gay Christmas movies?

Whether you’re looking for love under the mistletoe, queer found-family moments, or a glittering dose of camp, this list has you covered.

Let’s dive in!

  1. Single All the Way (2021)

Netflix gave us the gift of gender non-conforming holiday joy with this charming rom-com.

Michael Urie stars as Peter, who ropes his best companion Nick (Philemon Chambers) into pretending to be his boyfriend when visiting his family.

Of course, counterfeit dating turns into actual sparks—because Christmas magic never fails! Bonus points for Jennifer Coolidge as a delightfully dramatic aunt.

  1. Happiest Season (2020)

Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis headline this heartwarming (and sometimes heart-wrenching) story about a woman bringing her girlfriend home for the holidays—while staying in the closet to her conservative family.

Dan Levy’s scene-stealing role as the supportive same-sex attracted bestie makes this Hulu gem an instant classic.

  1. The Holiday Sitter (2022)

Hallmark finally gave

‘The Holiday Sitter’: Hallmark’s First Christmas Movie Featuring Lgbtq+ Couple Is For “Other People In The Society Who Want To Be Acknowledged”

Starring in a Hallmark Christmas movie today isn’t much different than appearing in Mean Girls 18 years ago, says star Jonathan Bennett: just like he did with Lindsay Lohan in 2004, he “meet cutes” an attractive single in a rom-com type setting in The Holiday Sitter.

This time, however, Bennett is making a small history: the movie debuting Dec. 11 at 8. p.m. marks the first time a Hallmark holiday flick revolves around a same-sex couple. In this case, Bennett plays a confirmed bachelor named Sam who agrees to observe his teen nephew and young niece while their parents are away. He ends up falling for Jason (George Krissa), an easy-on-the-eyes neighbor who’s far more adept at compassionate for kids.

“We’re doing all the classic things that we devote in Hallmark movies,” Bennett tells Deadline. “We’re doing the tropes that we’ve come to love and expect from watching Hallmark movies. We’re just turning up the comedy and having two men as the leads in

Lesbian Christmas movies: the ultimate frontier. In a Christmas Movie landscape dominated by heterosexual workaholic girl-bosses returning to their hometowns in power suits and falling for heterosexual males who do artisan/manual labor, for many years nary a lesbian or bisexual girl, let alone a neutrois person, dared to create an appearance. It’s usually been hard to locate any LGBTQ+ Christmas movies at all, but in recent years gay men have been emerging out of the corners into the Christmas spotlight in droves and also, occasionally, a wee lesbian, lgbtq+ or trans woman or a non-binary person has earned a few minutes under the mistletoe. In 2020, Clea Duvall’s Happiest Seasonstarring Kristen Stewart broke records for Hulu, and subsequent years have even brought some queer stories from Lifetime (Under the Christmas Tree, 2021) and Hallmark (Friends & Family Christmas, 2023). Although we’ve rarely found ourselves in the mainstream Christmas film spotlight, we have shown up as side characters and in indie films here and there, and in this genre it seems we’ll take what we can get!

One of the best parts of the holidays is snuggling up with some popcorn and a tasty beverage and watching a cheesy movie …or five. We’ve compiled a list of the best LGBTQ Christmas movies on TV this year for you to binge.

Until recently, the majority of holiday rom-com relationships on TV were hetero – big metropolis girl falls for small-town guy, or big capital guy falls for small-town girl – but more and more, a wider variety of relationships are being represented during the holiday movie season. With network and streaming options available, there are more platforms than ever producing more diverse content. Here are a few of our fave LGBTQ Christmas movies to check out between your yearly viewing of Elf and Christmas Vacation.

The Holiday Sitter

Home of the “you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all” Christmas movies, Hallmark has finally put a queer couple front and center. In its first LGBTQ Christmas movie, The Holiday Sitter features Jonathan Bennet (hunky Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls) as Sam, a big city Manhattanite who has to use Christmas in the burbs to babysit his niece and nephew instead of his planned sunny vacay in Hawaii.
