Amsterdam is known as a city of tolerance. With nationalities it’s the most diverse city in the World. The diversity is also related to our strong and vivid LGBTQIA+ community, which belongs to Amsterdam and strengthens its atmosphere of tolerance and creativity. It was in that the world’s first same-sex marriage was conducted by our former mayor. We are proud of this fact and in we will celebrate 25 years of marriage equality. Nowadays, tolerance for and freedom of the LGBTQIA+ community is not widespread. Therefore, the city of Amsterdam has put stern effort into protecting our community. Ifyou’veever wondered what a truly gay and loving urban area might look like, you might consider attending Stockholm Pride on the Saturday when Pride Parade snakes through the city for nearly three miles. Cheered on by half a million spectators, the Stockholm Pride Parade commences at Stockholm City Hall, wending its way through Identity festival City in Kungsholmen to Pride House in Norrmalm and on through Ostermalm where more than 45, participants with floats pride triumphantly into Pride Park, the historic sports earth that played host to the Summer Olympics.
“I have a big vision for Stockholm,” states the current mayor of Stockholm, the Honorable Karin Wanngård, “It will be a city for all.”

On the Friday afternoon of Pride weekend, Wanngård performs marriage ceremonies for LGBTQ couples at City Hall Park. “We have hosted marriage ceremonies for the past three years and now other locales are copying us, which is good. Lgbtq+ fest is a great opportunity to show off the city and the great things of Sweden, because there is so much good to see in this country.”

You probably know what it means to “come out” as gay. You may even have heard the expression used in relation to other kinds of identity, such as existence undocumented.
But do you comprehend where the term comes from? Or that its meaning has changed over time?
In my book “Come Out, Come Out, Whoever You Are,” I explore the history of this designation, from the earliest days of the gay rights movement to today, when it has been adopted by other movements.
Selective Sharing
In the late 19th and early 20th century, gay subculture thrived in many big American cities.
Gay men spoke of “coming out” into gay society—borrowing the word from debutante society, where elite young women came out into high culture. A news article in the Baltimore Afro-American referred to “the coming out of new debutantes into homosexual society.” It was titled, “ Debutantes Incline at Local ‘Pansy’ Ball.”
