Central Alabama Pride, Inc. (CAP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to spreading the message of equality each year with the production of our LGBT Pride events which also brings together all Alabama citizens. We also back HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout the year such as Birmingham AIDS Outreach, AIDS Alabama, Magic City Wellness Center and Acceptance Center.

CAP is directed by an unpaid, volunteer Board of Directors. Board Members take on the responsibility for directing and overseeing the production of PRIDE each year. Whether as a Committee Chair or as a committee member, they are assisted by numerous event volunteers who are a respected and crucial piece of PRIDE.

Our events sketch an estimated 40,000+ attendees, and we’re showing continued growth with each passing year. PrideFest is a free, outdoor festival that brings together the LGBT community with food, tune, and live entertainment for an all-day and evening event. This event is the highlight of a week-long series of events in June that includes the Pride Parade. It is by far the largest Pride event held in the state.

The first annual Gay Event marches were held on or near June 28, 1970—the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots—in Fresh York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. These early marches, originally called the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parades after the street on which the Stonewall Inn was located, concentrated on political protest and securing rights for the individuals in the LGBTQ community. These marches were not the first attempts to secure equivalent rights for the LGBTQ community. Frank Kameny had organized a demonstration established as the “Annual Reminder” in Philadelphia starting in 1964, in which participants dressed conservatively and refrained from expressing public warmth. Emboldened by the events at the Stonewall Inn in 1969, activists decided a more radical approach was necessary to secure their vision of a more accepting future. After the first Christopher Highway Liberation Day Parades in 1970, the event spread to more cities across the United States, eventually adopting the name Identity festival, an acronym for Personal Rights in Defense and Education. The term Self-acceptance to describe the marches, parades, and other festivities has come to signify an activist movemen
